Hoosier Cuts - A Portals Spotlight On Self-Employment
Edgar was already finishing up his training to be a barber when he first learned about the self-employment program through Vocational Rehabilitation (VR). He knew from a friend that VR could help get his business started if he met the requirements and presented as a good candidate. Edgar has proven with his business that skill and motivation can do great things. Hoosier Cuts has been operational at the University Park Mall in Mishawaka since 2017 and is doing very well.
For Edgar, the business is more than just a haircut, it’s about “Making people feel good,” and that mantra is reflected in his business slogan, “Stay Fresh, Look Fresh, Feel Fresh.” From the first time you meet Edgar, this is something you believe. It comes from a place of genuine sincerity.
When asked about his experience working with Portals, Edgar says, “They were very helpful and knowledgeable. I appreciate them – I would give them an A+.” If you are thinking about entering the VR self-employment program, Edgar says, “Take everything in, it’s a good thing – a blessing. Like hitting the lottery, and just be patient.” To summarize his time in the program he says, “VR was awesome, they are good people doing good things.”
If you happen to be in the Mishawaka area, stop in and say hi to Edgar at the University Park Mall where you can enjoy a great haircut and conversation from Mr. Trevino himself. You can also find the business on Facebook by searching Hoosier Cuts.
Here at Portals, we have many self-employment success stories to share. If you are inspired by the idea of starting your own business, or if you are a counselor that has a candidate you believe is a good fit for self-employment, please contact us.
